Your website is often the first thing that people see and read about you. Nailing that first impression is crucial. To me, the role of design is to serve, support and reinforce your message. After all, people come to your website for the content, not the design. As web designer and author Jeffrey Zeldman eloquently put it:
Content precedes design. Design in the absence of content is not design, it’s decoration.
That is why I never use placeholder text in my designs, and why I never start designing before I have a clear idea of the company’s personality and what it wants to communicate. The design helps convey your message, and thus that message needs to inform the design from the start.
This approach leads to a bespoke and more effective design, that usually gets approved with little or no modification.
